A galt is a pool in red granite which often occurs near a dripping place. The largest galt in the high mountain area is Galt el Azraq, 7 meters across and 4 meters deep (some say it's 7 meters deep). It is shaded by cliffs and a large willow tree stands at its waters edge. In the summer you can take a cooling dip in its deep waters. In the winter the pool can freeze solid! Some meters from Galt el Azraq is a grotto whose entrance is flanked by maidenhair fern. Alas, this grotto has been used as toilet and rubbish dump. A specimen of the Rubus sanctus grows at the entrance of this grotto. The Rubus sanctus is a shrub which is revered to as the burning bush at the monastery. It is an extremely rare endemic species of Central Asiatic origin whose range is limited to the high mountain region in the vicinity of a water source.

Galt el Azraq

Just past this orchard there is a path going to the left up the slope to Naqb Gebal (Gebal pass). From Naqb Gebal a path leads down wadi Gebal passing many gardens and orchards. The wadi starts as a wide open highland but narrows down to a steep rocky downhill descent with on the right and left gardens. At a certain point the path curves to the right. Straight ahead is a path leading to Gebel Bab (see Bab el Dunya (12)). Not far after the curve to the right is a small bedouin village called Marufia. After the village the wadi opens up to a broad plain known as Farsh Romana. Here Mohammed Saleh has built a camp, where you can spend the night. To the left there is an opening between boulders marked by 2 poles leading to a handsome plain with bedouin tombs and bronze age sepulchers. Returning to Farsh Romana, you continue on the path. After 2 km you reach an observation point. Down in the valley below you can see 2 pools, one of them is Galt el Azraq (blue pool). Straight ahead you can see Gebel Tarboush. The descent down to Galt el Azraq is steep!

From Galt el Azraq, you climb up a steep rocky pass to Naqb Umm Silah, and continue to Farsh Umm Silah and Farsh Tuweta (where a lone mulberry tree stands). This is a nice place to camp the night. From here climb the slope to Naqb el Tinya and into wadi Tinya. From here you reach wadi Zawatiin (see Gebel Abbas Pasha (11)).
